Regular ringing sessions take place at Holland Haven undertaken by the ringing team comprising of Simon & Pat Cox, Peter Newton & Leon Woodrow.

Barn Owl, Sparrowhawk, Cuckoo present during most of the morning, and a Great White Egret was on the pool in front of the viewing platform on departure (viewed from the Scrape).

28 birds ringed this morning: Lesser Redpoll 10, Meadow Pipit 10, Reed Bunting 5, Wren 1, Swallow 1, Stonechat 1 ( photo shows 4 juv type un-moulted outer greater coverts = 1st winter bird). Passerine passage viewed from ringing base: Goldfinch 400+, L Redpoll 15+, few Linnets & Swallows, M Pipit 80+. Also Green Woodpecker 1.

Yesterday’s Redpoll was ringed on 05/10 ie 3 days earlier at Minsmere by the Waveney Ringing Group.

Cetti’s Warbler caught Haven reed-bed on 08/10 had been ringed at Icklesham, E Sussex on 29/09/21, movement of 109 km. One I ringed at Haven in 09/16 was controlled 3 weeks later at Iken Marsh, Suffolk.

Steady passage of Swallows (200-250 v approx) & M Pipits (150-200 v approx). 1 House Martin noticed.

Strong passage of Swallows & M Pipits—hopefully BC will have meaningful figures. Pipits continued after you left Brian—another 30 at least.

Sedge W caught in JWR today was ringed on 7/8/20 as juv in Haven reed-bed.

Just received report of a 2nd juv Sedge W ringed Haven 11/08/21 controlled Loire-Atlantique, France. This one on 17/08, earlier one on 19/08. Latest one at same French site as another  controlled Aug ‘20.

1016 birds ringed at Haven sites 2021 (SC/PN) inc. Swallow 420, Reed Bunting 140, Meadow Pipit 98, Reed Warbler 81, Sedge Warbler 70, House Martin 33, Cetti’s Warbler 15.

Reed Bunting ringed Haven 3/10/19 has been seen at garden feeder in Ipswich 4/2/21, 8/7/21 & 30/1/22. Interesting site fidelity!

Reed Warbler juv. caught Haven 19/08 at 09:00 had been ringed 18/08 at 05:43 at Newbourne, Suffolk. 25 km apart.

135 Birds ringed this am: Swallow 100, House Martin 22, Sand Martin 1, Reed Warbler 3, Sedge Warbler 1, Cetti’s Warbler 1, Whitethroat 1, Chiffchaff 1, Mipit 3, Reed Bunting 2. 

Early Mipit passage 25+, can only guess hirundine numbers, maybe Swallow 400-500, House Martins 60+. One Sedge Warbler was very heavy: 17.4 gm Fat score 7 (scale 0-8). Typical summer weight 10-12 gm so loaded & ready to go!

Great session 0600-1330, 106 birds ringed: Swallow 81 (all juvs), Sand Martin 6, Reed Warbler 9, Sedge Warbler 5, Blue Tit 2, single Willow Warbler, Linnet, Reed Bunting. Also caught 3 Swallows ringed as chicks this year—one of mine from Thorpe Cross & last 2 birds caught were PN’s from Thorpe Stables with consecutive numbers ie same nest!

Hard to say if all the Swallow flocks were different but 450+ seen at a best estimate, maybe 30+ House Martins. Sparrowhawk gave them some grief !

25 Birds ringed this am: Sedge Warbler 6, Reed Warbler 4, Whitethroat 6, Reed Bunting 2, Willow Warbler 1, Swallow 1, Blue Tit 3, Whinchat 1.

Simon & Pat undertook a ringing session in the reed bed this morning.

30 birds ringed : Sedge Warbler 16, Reed Warbler 5, Reed Bunting 1, Meadow Pipit 1, Blue Tit 2, Swallow 3, Whitethroat 1, Dunnock 1. Retraps Reed Warbler 3 (‘16, ‘18 & recent)


Thu 8th Aug 19

Simon & Pat undertook a ringing session in the reed bed this morning.

36 birds ringed this am: Sedge Warbler 18, Reed Warbler 7, Reed Bunting 2, Meadow Pipit 1, Whitethroat 1, Blue Tit 2, Bearded Tit 3. Plus Willow Warbler 2 in sallows.  All today's Bearded Tits were juv. females.

1 of the Willow Warblers ringed today was controlled at Beachy Head on 25 Aug 19 (138 km)


Sun 4th Aug 19

Simon & Pat undertook a ringing session in the reed bed this morning.

40 birds ringed this am: Sedge Warbler 10, Reed Warbler 9, Whitethroat 11, Reed Bunting 1, Meadow Pipit 3, Willow Warbler 2, Blue Tit 3, Linnet 1. Retraps Reed Warbler ringed 09/16, Reed Bunting recent, Ad male Beardie ringed by PN back hedge 30/03/19.

Mon 29th July 19

Simon & Pat undertook a ringing session in the reed bed this morning.
15 Birds ringed this am : Whitethroat  4, Sedge Warbler 3, Reed Warbler 2, Reed Bunting 2, Meadow Pipit 2, WREN 1, Bearded Tit 1 (juv fem).  No retraps.


Wed 24th July 19

Simon & Pat undertook a ringing session in the reed bed this morning.
23 Ringed :- Reed Warbler 11, Sedge Warbler 6, Meadow Pipit 3, Swallow 2, Whitethroat 1. Only 1 retrap, RW ringed as juv on 3/8/13 not retrapped before.

3 Avocet chicks were ringed on the scrape this evening

Ringed :- 6 Sedge (5 juvs), 3 Reed Warblers (2 juvs) & 1 Whitethroat. 
Retraps Reed Warblers from 2017 & 2018.

Most disappointing moment, a Cuckoo hit the net , bagged , and then managed to fly out!! Only thing of interest , at least a further 2 Cetti's heard , 2 Mistle Thrushes on approach to back hedge , and a Sparrowhawk . A minimum of 3 Med Gulls flew over , with a further 2+ heard calling but not seen. A further 3 Reed Warblers were seen.
