Scrape hide. 2 Coot, 35 Shelduck, 6 Shoveler, 9 Gadwall, 15 Teal , 2 Snipe. Fulmar north offshore. Farm loop, 1 Yellow Wagtail, 3 Corn Bunting, 2 Whimbrel and 1 Wheatear.

A good start for me at the farm this morning with a Hobby and a Yellow Wagtail (both NFY for me). The Hobby was over the arable between the paddocks and Frinton Tennis Club and the Yellow wag was with the white horse in the last but one paddock.

I joined PD on the main site where things were much the same with lots of Chiffchaffs, a few Blackcaps & Whitethroats but no Lesser Whitethroat or Willow Warbler heard.

An interesting Sylvia song from the bramble on the mounds took up a bit of time mid-morning but nothing was seen unfortunately.

14:42 Coot is rather obligingly still on the Scrape and a Cuckoo has just flown in over the hide.

16:17  At last, a Stunning Short-eared Owl hunting over the marsh just south of golf course. My first one here in 3 years.

17:47 Popped in to lay-by on way back from Walton measure and Short-eared still hunting on marsh near wooden hide.

18:56 Afternoon visit from the scrape hide, ad male Marsh Harrier and another imm male Marsh Harrier later in aerial dogfight with Short eared Owl. 43 Shelduck, 8 Shoveler, 1 Wigeon, 8 Gadwall, 10 Teal, 7 Avocet and Coot. Cuckoo flew over very close probably come in off sea. 6 Wheatear by Wooden hide 3 male and 3 female. Nice flock of 22 Whimbrel on Golf Course.

No sign of yesterdays Nightingale but Lesser Whitethroat was new for the year list, another singing Willow Warbler, Blackcap  and lots of Chiffchaffs around the bushes.

Med Gull 2, Barwit 1, Golden Plover 3.  Single Sedge and 2 Cetti’s singing half-heartedly.  Decent finch passage between the showers - haven area totals 62 Linnet, 17 Goldfinch and 4 Siskin plus 2 Swallow all south Offshore north 2 Med Gull, 2 Fulmar, single Brent and Barwit.

I spent the morning with Pete Loud, great to hear the Nightingale in the badger Sett and the first singing Willow Warbler of the year is always special.

16:29 Farm paddocks this morning, 2 Redwing & 2 Corn Bunting. Brook over the road, drake Garganey, 2 Gadwall, Little Grebe, Sedge, Cetti’s Warblers and Whitethroat. Entrance road, 3+ Blackcap, 4+ Chiffchaff. Nightingale singing  from bushes around badger set. Singing Willow Warbler showed in bushes by hide. From hide, 9 Avocet, 3 Curlew, 2 Wigeon, 15+ Teal, 18 Shelduck, 6 Shoveler, 3 Gadwall,  Ad male Marsh Harrier, Sedge & Cetti’s Warbler. Red Kite in the air with 10 Buzzards behind golf course, plus 3 House Martin, 2 Whimbrel Golf Course, 7 Turnstone on French point. Plenty of Sedge in the reeds but no Reed Warbler as yet. 4 Little Egret on flooded marsh on way back plus a fine Male Wheatear by the wooden Hide.

Yesterdays Crane was still on site first thing but soon flew over the back hedge and was lost to view, somehow it managed to slip away unseen as an hour later it was reported at the Naze before heading out north.

Richard started the day with a nice Yellow Wagtail over the road and good views of the Cetti's Warbler.

My walk along the approach road added several Chiffchaffs plus a Blackcap and my first Willow Warbler of the year. After Brian's message we all headed for the hide and thankfully the Spotted Redshank was still around.

Very Windy again today, I started over the road where the Linnet flock on the set-aside must number 40+ now, plus 1 Whitethroat (nfy), 2 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Chiffchaff, Blackcap and Reed Bunting and 2 Swallows around the humpback bridge.

2 Chiffchaffs were singing along the approach road and at the dipping pond and a further 2 at the feeding stn. and behind the sluice.

From the hide: 4 Canada Geese, c20 Teal, 14 Shelduck, 8 Shoveler, 8 Mallard, 7 Gadwall, 2 Wigeon, 9 Avocet, 5 Redshank, 5 Lapwing, 3 Curlew, 2 Oystercatcher, c50 Blk. H Gull, 8 Herring Gulls, 4 Med Gulls, 2 LBB, 12+ Swallow. Also the first Small Copper butterfly of the year.

Very windy this morning, couple of Whitethroat and Blackcap heard around the bushes plus 4+ Chiffchaff.

Unfortunately the BarWit had departed before I reached the hide, but 8 Avocet, 6 Lapwing, 6 Redshank, 4 Curlew, 2 Whimbrel, 1 Ruff, c30 Teal, 11 Shelduck, 10 Shoveler, 8 Mallard, 7 Gadwall, c40 Blk H Gulls, 2 LBB, 1 GBB, 10+ Swallows, 3 Sand Martin, 1 Buzzard were around the marsh SG/MT/BH/MR et.al.

A much nicer start to the morning but still a chill wind off the sea first thing, I started over the road where a Cetti's Warbler showed really well several times, 2 Lt Grebe were on the brook and c20 Linnets plus Reed Buntings, Chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Mippits were all noted, 2 Swallows around the humpback bridge. Along the approach road were 2+ Chiffchaff, 2 Blackcap (m&f), 1 Willow Warbler (DC), very quiet in the Dell.




The drake Garganey was elusive for much of the morning, but still showed well on a few occasions, otherwise things were much the same 16 Avocet, 7 Gadwall, Shelduck and Shoveler but no Med Gulls while we were in the hide.

The Sedge Warbler was still singing and showing well in the reedbed just north of the wooden hide

Peter Newton had a wander down to the hide this morning and had 6 Purple Sands on the sluice, No sign of the Garganey but otherwise much the same, 5 Med Gulls, 4 LBB and a Common Gull, Lapwing, Curlew, Redshank all noted plus 3 Swallow, 1 Sand Martin, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 5 Chiffs and a Reed Bunting.

14:34 1 Fieldfare up at the farm paddocks first thing. From the Scrape hide the Garganey was showing for a while until it decided to sleep in the long grass out of view. Numbers of Duck similar to yesterday although Shoveler were down. 12 Avocet, 1 Curlew, 1 Swallow, 4 Sand Martins and Cetti’s also from hide. 2-3 pairs of Med Gull about and still plenty of Chiffchaff around site. 11 Turnstone and a couple of Purple Sands on the rocks by the cafe. I had a few minutes off my sick bed for a walk in the sunshine and found out just how chilly the onshore breeze is.

Lots of gulls on the scrape while I was there that included 8 super adult Med Gulls (4Pairs). Thankfully I bumped into Pete Davis who had some proper numbers

1 Little Egret, 59 Shoveler, 5 Gadwall, 18 Shelduck, Mute Swan, 2 Canada Geese, 30+ Wigeon, 40+ Teal, 4 Oiks, 2 Avo’s, 5 Redshank, 12 Curlew, 5 Cliff, 4 Cetti PRD

11:30 Green Sandpiper on Leon’ Marsh.

13:20 This morning @ The Haven , 1 Purple Sandpiper on the sluice, from the hide normal stuff, 11 Avocets and increase of Gadwall to 8, 38 Shoveler, 6 Buzzards, 1 Green Sandpiper and 1 Swallow. Red Admiral by the pill box.

14:25 Seawatching from the shelter was slow this morning, just 8 Red throats and 10 Gannets, all adults. A few small groups of Siskin and Chaffinch heading north early on. Ruff still on Scrape with 1 Dunlin, 6 Redshank, 11 Curlew, 5 Avocet, 2 Med Gulls and all the usual ducks. 11 Turnstone on seawall, and a couple of Chiffs around site.(RJ,ML,PL)

14:00 From shelter this morning, 60+ Red throated Diver moving offshore, 6 Shoveler, 5 Barnacle Geese, 2 Brent Geese, 3 Shelduck, 5 Gannet & 9 Siskin flew north. Walk to beach huts,3 pairs of Med Gull, 1 Stonechat, 6 Purple Sand and Red Kite. (RJ, PL)
