Mon 27th Sept 21

A late start this morning turned out well for me, when I stopped at the sluice to chat with Steve & Matt as they picked up 2 Little Tern heading south, a Haven year tick for me. Brave men to stick it out for four hours in the harsh conditions but a good list in the end, see below.

On the scrape: 1 Greylag, 30+ Teal, 15 Wigeon, 7 Cormorant, 1 Grey Heron, c40 Lapwing, 7+ Snipe, 3 Avocet, 1 Ruff, 1 Common Gull with a few Blk. Headed and Herring Gulls. Not sure if the low wader numbers were due to yesterdays Peregrine or the atrocious conditions mid morning.

Sun 26th Sept 21

A few Chiffchaff calling around the site this morning but a bit windy for scanning the bushes, c35 Swallows over on the way to the sluice, from the sluice 13 Brent headed South and 2 North, 4+ Turnstone were on the sluice rocks with the Gulls.MR

The juv. Peregrine gave some excitement late morning, in the first flight over the scrape it had a set to with a Sparrowhawk over the tern raft and a few minutes later came in again and tried to snatch a Ruff from the middle of the scrape, the Ruff headed off toward Gt. Holland with the Peregrine in hot pursuit until the pair were lost to view. In the next few minutes only 1 Ruff and 1 Lt. Stint were viewable so hopefully the others were still trembling in the reeds. PRD/MR

A Wheatear was on the seawall near the sluice on the way back.

Bushes alive with Chiffs calling, Grey Wag in sewage farm but the undoubted highlight was this Wheatear on the sluice Rocks, presumably fresh-in it puts some perspective into the migration these birds make before I grumble about the lack of ‘scarce and rare migrants’ and sent me home happy.
