A good ringing session for Simon & Pat added Lesser Redpoll to the site year list (see Ringing page) first thing

Several Chiffchaff around the bushes this morning but not much else, overhead a good passage including Swallows, Meadow Pipit, Skylark, Redpoll and Goldfinch was evident for most of the morning.

From the hide: c30 Teal, 9 Wigeon, 1 Mallard, 14 Lapwing (lots more on the arable), 2 Greenshank, 1 Avocet, 1 Dunlin, 36 B H Gulls (lots more on the arable), 6 Herring Gull, 2 Cormorant, 2 Grey Heron, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Kingfisher, 2 Buzzard, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Kestrel. 

A walk to the 3rd. pillbox added Lesser Redpoll (in the hand), 2 Stonechat, 1 Wheatear, 1 S E Owl, 9 Golden Plover (over), 5 Buzzard (circling high over the arable) PL/RJ/MR

A Gt. White Egret flew along the marsh below the carpark before landing for a short while in the short ditch north of the approach road, after a few minutes it continued on it's way over the road and was lost to view.

From the hide: c30 Teal, 9 Wigeon, 2 Mallard, 94 Lapwing, 2 Blk T Godwit, 1 Ruff, 1 Avocet, 4 Cormorant, 2 Grey Heron, 2 Lt. Grebe, 350 ++ Blk. H Gulls, 6 Herring Gulls, 1 Common Gull, 2 Buzzard, 1 Peregrine, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Kestrel, lots of Swallows + a few House Martin, 10 Red-legged Partridge were up on the arable. From the hide: c30 Teal, 4 Mallard, 85 Lapwing, 2 Dunlin, 2 Curlew, 1 Ruff, 1 Avocet, 60 Blk. H Gulls, 3 Herring Gulls, 4 Cormorant, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Lt. Grebe, 1 Buzzard, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Kestrel.

A walk to the 3rd pillbox added 3 Wheatear, 2 Stonechat, 1 Whinchat and a steady stream of Swallows plus a few Sand Martin, Mippits and Skylark.

Offshore signs of a bit of an increase in wildfowl movement with several small groups of Wigeon and one flock of 350+ birds heading south with a few Teal. PL/RJ/MR

We spent a few minutes with Graham toward the end of his sea-watch, then had a quick look around the bushes, all very quiet.

From the hide: 16 Teal, 6 Wigeon, 4 Mallard, c40 Lapwings, 2 Snipe, 1 each of Ruff, Dunlin, Curlew, Avocet & Blk. T Godwit, 1 Water Rail (heard only), c500 Blk. H Gulls, 1 Common Gull, 1 GBB Gull, 3 Cormorant, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Reed Warbler, 1 Cetti's Warbler, lots of Swallows, Pipits and a few House Martin (over). A walk to see Simon & Pat ringing in the reedbed (see Ringing page) added 1 Whinchat, 1 Stonechat & 1 Whitethroat. RJ/MR

A short seawatch this morning showed a small movement starting with 31 Brent, 3 Wigeon, 2 Shelduck and a Cormorant all heading south.

Also on the move were a good number of Mippits, Skylark, Swallow and a few Sand Martin and Siskin. PL/MR

From the hide: 18 Canada Geese (plus a mixed family group of Greylag/Canada hybrids that seemed very similar to the ones that bred here last year), 2 Mallard, 1 Wigeon, 1 Lt. Grebe, 79 Lapwing, 2 Dunlin, 1 Ruff, c20 Blk. H Gulls, 3 Grey Heron, 20+ Siskin (over), 2 Chiffchaff, Reed & Cetti's Warbler.

A walk to the wooden hide added 2 Stonechat, 1 Whinchat, 1 Whitethroat.

Cracking Manx Shearwater close in north, 5 Gannet, 1 Guillemot, 4 Common Scoter, Southbound, 10 Brent, 6 Pintail, 8 Sandwich Tern & 12 Dunlin. Scrape water level very low, just 1 Dunlin, 1 Marsh Harrier, 2 Stonechat. Along the Seawall 2 Wheatear, 1 Whinchat.

Highlight of the day was a Gt. White Egret that dropped into the scrape shortly after I arrived and spent 15mins in the middle of the scrape before flying out to the south west.

17:07 Walk from Frinton to The Haven and back via the farm this morning: 1 Tree Pipit, 861 Meadow Pipit (781 south, heaviest movement between 07:30 and 8:30, few before this, steady passage after; and 80+ feeding in paddocks/fields round farm), 5 Wheatear (4 together along seawall, 1 by sluice - another behind the golf course workshop probably a sixth), 2 Grey Wag (south), 2 Stonechat, 1 Whinchat (with 1 of the stonechat by boardwalk), 8 Reed Bunting (4 south), 12 Curlew, 6 Cetti’s (singing), 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 9 Chiff, 30 Siskin (south), 2 Reed Warbler, 1 Sedge Warbler, 8 Pied Wag, 1 Yellow Wag (south), 2 Song Thrush, 2 Blackcap, 1 Goldcrest (by farm pond), 1 Little Stint, 4 Dunlin, 39 Swallow (20 south, 19 feeding over paddocks), 3 Buzzard (2 circling very high and drifting south).

After yesterdays great sea-watching, a few minutes looking out to sea showed that there was very little on the move today, but a Razorbill sitting close offshore was a year tick bonus.

Very quick visit for me today had 9 Curlew Sands drop into the scrape at 12:30 to join the birds from Grahams list below and the Kingfisher was still along the brook behind the sluice.

14:17 Haven this am, quiet around bushes, just 3 Chiffs, 1 Lesser & 2 Whitethroat. 2 Grey Wagtail flew over Dell plus a Marsh Harrier. Scrape, 2 Common Sand, 4 Ruff, 2 Dunlin, 1 Snipe, 60+ Lapwing, 1 Little Egret, 1 Whinchat, then the juvenile Spoonbill flew in and shortly after a group of 7 Dunlin with 3 Curlew Sand with them. 3 Ringed Plover briefly flew in and out, followed by the Curlew Sand and Dunlin. Walk along the the seawall, 2 Wheatear, 1 Common & 1 Sandwich Tern. Kingfisher again in brook by sluice.

12:17 Walk to Frinton beach huts this morning, 5 Sanderling close in south, 1 Common Sand, 2 Turnstone, 4 Sandwich Tern, 4 Wheatear and 3 Auks on the sea were too far out to safely identify. Scrape, 3 Avocet, 3 Snipe, 4 Ruff, 1 Spoonbill early but not there on the way back. 1 Little Egret, 60 Lapwing, 11 Teal,  2 Shoveler. Redstart still showing in the Dell just before leaving site.(RJ, PL).

A female type Redstart in the Dell was a good start for Richard this morning and the bird was still showing well at mid-day. Simon & Pat's ringing session in the reedbed turned up the first Grasshopper Warbler of the year and a S E Owl dropped into the fields behind them mid-morning.(see Ringing page).

Another quiet day, a few Lesser Whitethroats, 1 Willow Warbler was about it in the Dell, plus a few Blackcap around the Orchard area.

A Turnstone was on the sluice rocks with the gulls.

A very warm morning with a nice cooling breeze made for a nice walk today, unfortunately only the normal warblers were showing themselves. Also there had been a bit of a clear out on the scrape.

08:12 Hours seawatch 7:05-8:05 6 Arctic Skua, 104 Common Tern, 7 Sandwich Tern, 17 Gannet, 4 Pintail, 2 Scoter and Teal.

08:55 S E Owl right of hide. On scrape so far 2 Curlew Sands, Wood Sand, 2 Ruff, Knot and a Common Sand. 3 Grey Wag over, 4 Siskin and a Ringo.

08:57 And Spoonbill, just come out.

09:24 Curlew Sands up to 6, 4 Ruff, 4 Common Sands, Snipe + Wheatear.

10:31 Pom Skua chased a gull and landed on sea between shelter and radar tower.

Fri 1st Sept 23


Another Great day from the hide with 10 spieces of wader present in varying numbers plus a Spoonbill and a new for year Caspian Gull. Waders were in and out all morning but 37 Ruff that dropped in late morning topped the lot, unfortunately we had left the hide a few minutes earlier and by the time we got to a vantage point the scrape had been cleared, but by what?, could have been the two Marsh Harriers seen several times through the morning or a S E Owl that was around the marsh at the time, things started to reappear soon after but not the 37 Ruff.

From the hide: Teal, Mallard, Shoveler, 1 Shelduck, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Spoonbill, 2 Lt. Grebe (juvs), c40 Lapwing, 10 Avocet, 6 Ruff (plus 37 for a short while), 4 Blk T Godwits, 3 Common Sands, 3 Dunlin, 3 Curlew Sands, 2 Greenshank, 1 Knot, 2 Marsh Harrier, 1 Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 1 S E Owl.

15:33 Arctic Skua close. North

17:05 Seawatching this morning, probably had 12 Artic Skua, but all distant heading south. 2 Common Scoter, 12 Gannet, 9 Sandwich, 5 Common & Probable juv Arctic Tern, 2 small groups of Wigeon. Spent little time round the bushes, 1 Lesser, 3 Common Whitethroat, 1 Chiffchaff. Scrape, Juv. Spoonbill, 6 Ruff, 3 Curlew Sand, 3 Common Sand, 3 Greenshank, 6 Dunlin, 10 Avocet, 4 Blackwit, 2 Marsh Harrier. This afternoon back at the Scrape, 5 possibly up to 7 Curlew Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper and a very obliging 1st year Caspian Gull that stayed for an hour or so. 1 Whinchat by wooden hide, 4 Wheatear along edge of Golf Course and a very close adult dark phase Arctic Skua  on way back which made up for all the distant earlier ones. Adult female Peregrine circled low overhead landing on the Radar Tower briefly then headed north .
