Tues 26th Apr 22

No sign of the Ring Ouzel this morning, but a cracking pair of Yellowhammers at the farm were a bonus.

Bird of the day had to be a Coot (a mega for the scrape nowadays) found by Pete Davis first thing, otherwise things were much the same, just 36 Avocet, Spotted Redshank, Redshank, Snipe, 2 BlkWits, Shoveler, Shelduck, Teal, Gadwall, Mallard, 3 Common Gulls and a pair of LBB Gulls seem to have found the nesting birds on the island and were causing mayhem for a while (not looking good for the Avo's & Blk Heads).

A lot more song around the site this morning.

Monday 25 April 2022

Mon 25th Apr 22

Brian Small had an early start this morning and locate a male Ring Ouzel in the set-aside field west of the chippings lay-by. It was showing well at 07:30 when arrived and did so for the next hour, feeding close to the lay-by with 2 Blackbirds, after Marsh Harrier passed over the field it flew to the back hedge and after a few minutes dropped behind the hedge and was lost to view.

Things on the scrape were much the same, with the Spotted Redshank still on view, 54 Avocet & 20 Common Gulls being the highlights. PRD/DW/BH/MR et al.

Saturday 23 April 2022

Sat 23rd Apr 22

A very average morning with just a new Spotted Redshank on the scrape was suddenly changed when Richard excitedly exclaimed (and I mean excitedly!!) that a pair of Cranes were dropping into the marsh. The two birds landed to the right of the hide and settled in, after c15 min of continual attention from nesting Lapwings they moved up onto the arable, and after a further few minutes farm traffic saw them climb quite high and drift out toward Lt. Clacton.

Around 11:30 the birds were relocated on the marsh west of the B1032 from the chippings lay-by.

Thurs 14th Apr 22

I started at the farm this morning, great to hear the Swallow chattering as they hawk over the farm yard, a Chiffchaff was in the churchyard and another by the pond and a Corn Bunting in the trees along the bridleway, all the normal stuff was around on a cracking morning.

Nothing new around the bushes on the main site a few Chiffchaff and Blackcaps, a couple of Turnstone on the sluice rocks so I joined Richard at the hide. After a while a Colour ringed Greenshank appeared but unfortunately the heat haze made it impossible to to get the combination, later in the morning a second bird dropped in. The Cetti's Warbler showed on a few occasions (not long enough for a decent photo though) and Sedge Warbler was singing on and off. A Whitethroat showed well in the bramble outside the hide and an interesting looking Chiffchaff moved through very close. RJ/MR

Wednesday 13 April 2022

Wed 13th Apr 22

With lots of birds being reported round and about things started very slowly for me, just a few Chiff's and Blackcaps singing, but nothing new. I felt a bit better when I met up with Richard & Max as they had found it the same; after visiting the farm, over the road and most of the southern end of the site. A walk to the 3rd pillbox was a slight improvement with a Whitethroat (NFY) picked up by Max, a few Reed Bunting, Linnets, 1 Stonechat and some cracking Med Gulls on the golf course.

From the hide: 2 Canada Geese, 12 Shoveler, 10 Shelduck, 5 Gadwall, a few Teal & Wigeon, 33 Avocet, 6 Lapwing, 5 Redshank, 2 Curlew, 2 Oystercatcher, 1 Snipe, 1 Grey Heron, Blk Headed Gulls, 2 Common Gulls, 4 Med Gulls, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Sedge Warbler (NFY)

Most of my numbers were similar to Brian's report below , 6 Turnstone on the sluice rocks were an addition, plus the pair of Sparrowhawk were again in the car park bushes and the Kestrels are back in the box on the PLA pylon.
