Another lovely morning to be out, 4 Chiffchaffs along the approach road and a male Blackcap were the best bits from around the bushes, the Scrape was much the same with the addition of 6 Med Gulls (one of which was the colour ringed bird seen by Paul at Frinton earlier in the week) and thanks to Max for picking up 2 Gt. C Grebe & 3 Red T Divers sitting close offshore on a flat calm sea.

15:31 PM visit to Haven. Feeders busy Blue & Great Tits Greenfinch male & female House Sparrows  making frequent visits. 

From Pillbox 30+ Avocets, 5 Blackwits, 6 Redshanks, 2 Snipe, 1 Green Sandpiper, 2 Oystercatchers, 5 Lapwings, 9 Shelduck, c15 Wigeon, 12 Teal, 1 Little Egret, 1 Cormorant. Sluice and rocks covered and visibility out to sea very poor so no joy there. A very pleasant outing good to be back.


At the end of March the number of species recorded at the Haven this year stands at 119.

Reports from today:

14:07 Fine spring morning at the Haven. Along the approach road were 2 Male Blackcap, 4 Chiffchaff, 1 Goldcrest & 1 Redwing. 54 Curlew were on the marsh. Raised platform end were 2 more Chiffs and a female Blackcap. Only a handful of Wigeon now but still 12+ Shoveler. The Sewage Farm hedge held a splendid Firecrest plus Goldcrest and Chiffchaff. From the Pill box, 4 Swallows and 2 Sand Martins, plus 34 Avocet, 2 Gadwall, 6 Redshank , 1 Little Egret, a Marsh Harrier and 7 Curlew. Cetti’s showed in Kirby creek, 2 Purple Sands and 7 Turnstones were by the Sluice and a few Red throats still offshore. 6 Peacock and 1 Tortoiseshell Butterfly noted.




Up at the Farm were 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, but not much else.

16:42 Brief visit earlier, first for a long time and good to bump into some friendly faces. 38 Avocet on scrape with 10 Redshank and 4 Snipe, single Sand Martin over with Barn Owl entering left hand box. Firecrest by Sewage works with a couple of noisy Meds nearby and pretty sure I heard Sandwich Tern as I got out of the car but couldn't locate.

Not quite as warm as promised first thing, but when the sun broke through the cloud mid morning it was almost like spring.

From the pillbox:  3 Greylag, 2 Canada Geese, Wigeon, Teal, 10 Shelduck & a few Shoveler, 54 Curlew, 24 Avocet, 15 Lapwing, 9 Snlpe, 7 Redshank, 3 BlkWits, 2 Oystercatcher, 1 LRP, 1 Peregrine, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Stonechat, 1 Reed Bunting, 1 Swallow. PRD/DC/MR.

On the way out 2 Chiffchaffs & my first Blackcap (male) of the year were around the Orchard area.

18:15 Quick visit up the farm before England game - no Wheatear and only 1 Mistle Thrush of note. Additions to PL’s report earlier where a brief White Wag on scrape, and 2 blackwit. 2 Common Scoter N and few Red T Divers past on brief seawatch.

13:52 LRP didn’t stay for long, departed just after 10am. The Scrape was similar to of late 60 Teal, 2 Gadwall, 4 Redshank, 20+ Snipe, 20 Wigeon and less Avocet, about 25. Chiffchaff by raised platform and 15 Wigeon and 12 Shoveler on marsh. 5 Purple Sand on the rocks and just 4 Red throats seen, quite a few Cormorant still and 2 Brent passing.

10:05 8 Wheatear on site for me this morning (1 by boardwalk and 7 in horse paddocks at farm). 5 Chiffchaff in the bushes. 

On scrape - 25 Snipe, 4 Redshank, 37 Avocet and 2 Blackwit on flood behind raised platform.

19:24 Another visit this evening- 3 Purple Sands and 9 Turnstone on groyne next to sluice, additional 3 Dunlin, Blackwits up to 4 and 5 Redshank. Rest of golf course covered and whailings beach huts but nothing else of note. 4 Siskins over this morning (1+1+2) and 2 Stonechat forgot off this mornings report.

Two new birds for the year list today with a Blackcap at the Dipping Pond and at least 5 Wheatear (3 near the wooden hide (DC), 2 on golf course (SC)) for Dave Cummings.

19:18 Haven today - Early am - Ruff on scrape, 12 Snipe, 5 Blackwit and 4 Redshank. Chiff and Crest in sewage farm hedge.

Late pm - Offshore - Eider (offshore with wigeon), Gannet S, 10+ Red T Diver (inc bird very close inshore, possibly ill), 40+ Curlew N, 2 Mallard and 2 Oyks (on sluice). 
Bushes - very quiet only a Goldcrest of note. 
Scrape - Green Sand, Lt Egret, 5 Balckwit, 2 Dunlin, 4 Redshank, few Snipe, 42 Avocet, Barn Owl. 
Checked golf course and beach huts (no Wheatear or Black Red still) just a pair of Stonechats.

10:06 Spotted Redshank on the scrape.

18:28 Haven this afternoon. Scrape the Spotted Redshank was still present, also 7 Dunlin, 6 Blackwits, 3 Redshank, 42 Avocet and 21 Snipe. On the flooded marsh to the right were 2 pair of Pintail, a pair of Gadwall a few Shoveler and 40 Curlew. 4 Purple Sandpipers were on the Sluice rocks. A Male Peregrine  was on the arable, then flew north low and fast putting everything up in its path.1 Goldcrest and a Chiffchaff by the sewage farm.

A nice morning for a walk but still a chilly wind on the front. A Chiffchaff was again singing in the ringing compound, an Adder on the mounds, and a single Knot on the outfall breakwater.

From the pillbox: 2 Canada Geese, Wigeon, Teal, 8 Shoveler, 4 Shelduck, 4 Gadwall, 50 Curlew, 40+ Avocet, c20 Lapwing, 9 Dunlin, 8+ Snipe, 3 Redshank, 2 BlkWits, 2 Oystercatcher, 1 Grey Heron, + Blk Headed, Herring, Common & Med Gulls.

Leaving site a second Chiffchaff was at the Dipping Pond & a Firecrest along the Approach Rd.

12:14 Haven today - Though going but finished with a Firecrest on the approach road also a Goldcrest and Chiffchaff singing. Couple of Redwing only other bits around bushes. 

2 Purple Sands on sluice, 9 Turnstone on french point rocks. Few Brent and Red T Divers offshore. First Stonechat for a while noted and on scrape - Green Sand, 3 Redshank, Blackwit, few Snipe and still good numbers of Avocet.

07:56 Haven 6:20-07:45. Vismig - Brambling N @ c6:40 past pillbox, few Linnets, Mipits etc N but too sunny really. 2 Brent, 4 R T Diver and regular groups of 20/30 Blk. H Gull all N. 

Scrape - Water Rail (showed twice on island and bottom right), 40 Avocet, c20 Snipe, 6 Redshank, 2 Blackwit. Barn Owl around grazing marsh and 3 Turnstone on sluice.

16:16 Firecrest on approach road at junction to haven path.

18:15 Evening visit - Firecrest and Goldcrest on approach road. 2 Redwing and 2 Song Thrush in rest of bushes. Scrape same as earlier (prob. actually less) and 500+ Wigeon still on site. Black-headed Gulls still going north on few glances to coast, and a Peregrine flushing the scrape.

18:15 Quite a departure started offshore (currently on golf course seawall). Decent flocks of Brent, Wigeon and Black Heads moving north. Some v high and distant, others close. 

18:51 What started as a typically quiet late pm wander around the golf course ended far better.  At least 8 Med Gulls on the field behind the gc (presumably the same ones that are being noisy outside my window in the mornings!), 2 Cettis in the borrowdyke north of the northern pillbox. Offshore at least 230 Red T Diver, 130 Wigeon with 9 Turnstone north. Then a sudden start of movement offshore (haven area totals) 1025 Blk H Gulls (5 big flocks), 1318 Brent (17 flocks), 231 Wigeon, 40 Teal.  Birds still passing and calling lots in the darkness now.   Mammal interest from a couple of Muntjac, 3 Common Seal and at least two Porpoise offshore.

Although the temperature was not very warm this morning a couple of Adders had found a warm spot to bask in the sunshine (see Haven Wildlife page).


Whose watching Who??


From the pillbox: A good number of Wigeon & Teal were on the scrape along with 4 Shelduck, 4 Shoveler, 35 Avocet, 20+ Lapwing, 8 Snipe, 3 Redshank, 1 BlkWit, + a Barn Owl sat on the bottom fence near the owl box & a Grey Heron was on the marsh to the right.

Lots of Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler and Shelduck were on the scrape below the raised platform + a large number of gulls inc. Blk. Headed, Herring, LBB and a Med Gull was calling overhead, on the way out a single Lt. Egret was on the Approach Rd. marsh.

125 Chaffinch, 5 Greenfinch, 5 Goldfinch, 1 Linnet, 20 Redwing (4+16), 4 Alba Wag (2n,2s), 2 Meadow Pipit, c10 Carrion Crow, c200 Starling, c300 Woodpigeon.  All stopped by c6:20. 

Med Gull on greensward, Barn Owl behind raised platform & Sparrowhawk  only other birds of note.

18:59 Haven this evening - Definite highlight 6 Redwing in ‘sub song’ from raised platform. 3 Goldcrest also in area. 

Scrape - 4 Redshank, 15+ Snipe, 35 Avocet, Dunlin, Blackwit, 3 Gadwall and 2 Grey Heron. Lt Egret flew N. Walked up to Golf Course dump and very little else noted.

14:59 Popped out this morning, but with a chilly NW thoughts of any spring migrants are a while away yet. A Goldcrest was in the bushes and on the Scrape were the Green Sandpiper, 2 Dunlin, 3 Redshank, 20+Avocet, 6 Snipe, 4 Gadwall and a few Shoveler. On the Marsh behind the raised platform were quite a few Wigeon & Teal, a Blackwit and 20 Curlew. 2 Adult Med Gulls flew over. A single Red-throat passed offshore.

A short walk along the front after lunch was a real pleasure, a single Adder was taking the sun on the mounds and 5 Turnstone, 1 Purple Sand were on the Boating Club rocks. A look over the scrape from the pillbox gave lots of Teal & Wigeon, 11 Shelduck, 6 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, c40 Lapwing, 26 Avocet, 24 Curlew (on marsh north of scrape), 10 Snipe, 3 Oystercatcher, 2 Blk T Godwits, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Redshank, 1 Dunlin.

07:19 Brief visit to haven this morning focused around raised platform - 3 Redwing, 3 Goldcrest, 2 Med Gulls (2cy+ad), c30 Curlew.

18:53 Haven this evening - Farm - 2 Corn Bunts having a sing off only birds of note. Couldn’t find a Wheatear or anything else of note on GC. 

From pillbox - Green Sand, 26 Avocet and 9 Snipe on scrape. 2 Blackwit and a Dunlin on flood to right and slight increase in both Shoveler and Mallard numbers (both low double figures). Barn Owl flying around and Water Rail calling to finish the evening.

15:49 From raised platform : Scrape and flooded field beyond, 100 + Gulls mostly Herring, 3 Shelduck, Pair + 1 Male Shoveler. West of scrape field below car park, 12 Curlew. In Orchard 1 Goldcrest, 1 Wren in Spiny. Green Woodpecker on Telegraph Pole and what I believe was a distant Corn Bunting but bins only can’t be 100%.

16:52 Bike up the farm. 

2 Fieldfare, Mistle Thrush, Corn Bunt, 3 Pied Wag, 2 Green Woodpecker, c100 Linnet, 50+ Chaffinch on farm paddocks. G S Woodpecker drumming, Peregrine on fields and large group of Starlings and Woodpigeon made for a totally enjoyable 30 mins.

12:40 Haven this morning, still pretty windy, no sign of yesterday’s Firecrest, but the Chiffchaff was showing well. Scrape 20 Avocet, 1 Dunlin, 2 Redshank & 6 Blackwits. 3 Turnstone on rocks. 60 Curlew, entrance marsh, Sparrowhawk displaying over the road and Cetti’s singing. Peregrine put everything up over scrape and the Red Kite heading south looking spectacular in the sunshine. Red Kite showed again on the way home by Reedland's Farm Little Clacton, obviously touring the area.

Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler and Shelduck, c50 Lapwing, 10+ Snipe. 5 Blk. T. Godwits, 2 Oystercatcher, 2 Avocet, 1 Dunlin, 1 Redshank, c80 Blk. H. Gulls, 3 Common Gulls + 15 Curlew (over), 2 Grey Heron on marsh to the right of hide. Also 1 Lt. Egret on Approach Rd. marsh.

19:33 Chinese Water Deer highlight this evening (only 2nd time I’ve had one I think). Birds thin on ground - 4 Blkwit, 2 Avocet, 3 Oyks and 4 Snipe on scrape. 2 Stonechat only other birds of note.

A short Haven walk today proved worthwhile with a Chiffchaff (NFY) along the sewage works hedge and second Adder (see Haven Wildlife page) making the most of the little bit of sunshine out of the wind.

16:40 First visit to Haven for over a month and post cataract op. Should have been a celebration but not the case. From pill box scrape 70+ Gulls mostly Herring C30 Wigeon, 3 Shelduck, 1 Mute Swan on arable, 3 Stock Doves. Sluice rocks and breakwater empty. No sign of Mick’s Chiffchaff but nice to catch up with Mick himself. Saving grace Barn Owl over road by bridge on way home.

07:19 Haven pre work - Woodcock the highlight flew towards marsh over wood at end of car park. Goldcrest in bushes, few Chaffinches and Goldfinch moving over. Med Gull over also, More Blackbirds and Chaffinches on deck.

Had an hour at the Haven this morning and a scan of the scrape from the pillbox gave the usual Wigeon, Teal, Shelduck and Shoveler + 16 Snipe, 4 Blk. T Godwit, 2 Redshank, 2 Oystercatcher and several Lapwing. On the marsh to the right of the was a very notable 71 Curlew. Also noted were 1 Grey Heron, 1 Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 3 Mute Swans. PRD/CP/MR

On the way back 4 Purple Sands and 2 Turnstone were on the sluice rocks.

19:02 Flying visit on the bike this evening- highlights a group of c40 Oystercatcher N over sea. 2 Goldcrest in car park bushes, 9 Avocet, a Blackwit, few Snipe and one of the hybrid Canada/ Greylags. 2 Cettis calling in the ditches along seawall towards Frinton with a Water Rail calling by raised tee. Still no Black Red at whalings beach huts or Wheatear on the gc. Sometime soon.... 😃.

13:23 Chilly out this morning, but soon warmed up after a walk to Frinton and back. Still plenty of Red-throats offshore & 1 G.C. Grebe, 4 Dunlin & 2 Curlew north. 3 Purple Sand & 5 Turnstone by Sluice. Scrape,19 Avocet, 25+ Snipe, 5 Blackwit, 2 Redshank and the usual selection of ducks. 2 Barnacles flew over heading north and a Water Rail was calling briefly. On the marsh near the Golf Course was a decent flock of 66 Curlew. On the way out a Little Egret entrance road marsh and a splendid adult Male Marsh Harrier over the arable on the other side of the road.

Offshore- seawatch 7-8:10am 2 Com Scoter N, 1 Brent N, 1 G C Grebe N, 100+ Red T Diver. Guillemot on sea + 3 G C Grebe and lots of Red T Diver. Later c11:30 scan in sluice bay produced 176 Red T Divers (on single scan in choppy sea, indication of how many out there... ) and 3 G C Grebe. Barnacle Goose and leucistic Greylag on arable alongside a Med Gull later on fields. Increase to 4 Goldcrest and few more Chaffinches in bushes.

Pillbox- 2 Stonechat, 6 ad GBB gulls powering N over scrape to Scandinavia? 

Scrape- 10+ Snipe, 1 Blackwit, 25 Avocet and 4 Gadwalls.

Woodcock in flight from seawall nr Golf Course dump (either in/off or flushed from seawall) but totally unexpected either way.

19:10 Bike up to farm this evening- c100 Linnets around paddocks, 2 groups of Curlew N along coast (c40 and 4) and group of c50 Bar-tailed Godwit N offshore. Group of 3 Grey Herons and a Little Egret N. Optimistic try of the whalings beach huts for Black Redstart again... no luck.

19:30 Haven this evening - Barn Owl hunting to right of hide. 18 Avocet, 5 Blackwit on scrape. Goldcrest in bushes. Only had bins but thought I had a distant Barnacle Goose with Canada’s to right of hide but when I attempted to get close look couldn’t find it. Guess that gives me something to look for tomorrow....

18:30 Haven this evening- still no proper spring migrants for me... 

6 Blackwit, 7 Snipe, 11 Avocet, 3 Gadwall and 2 Oyks on scrape. 45 Greylags inc. leucistic bird on arable and 8 Canada’s to right of hide. 10 Turnstone on sluice, a Red T Diver N and c30 Brents.

I had a walk at the Haven this afternoon, the sun was lovely but there was a chill wind off the sea.

From the pillbox: 3 Mute Swans, 112 Teal, 12 Shelduck, 8 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 2 Wigeon, 82 Lapwing, 10+ Curlew, 11 Avocet (1 colour ringed-not read), 6 Blk. T Godwits, 3 Oystercatcher, 1 Dunlin.

A large mixed gull flock was on the marsh below the raised platform as were lots more Wigeon, Teal & Shoveler.

19:45 Bit of an optimistic visit this PM. Nothing but still a joy to hear the Wigeon and Lapwing calling away in the fog. Yesterday evening- leucistic Greylags with c30 Greylags on arable, 8 Canada Geese (farm arable). Little Owl and Cettis calling from farm track/ Gc junction. Water Rail ran across back of scrape on Sunday PM.
