Tuesday 24 March 2020

Tue 24th March 20

Birding in the garden today, Blue Tits building in a nest box a pair of Collared Doves already sitting in the Hawthorn and a Woodpigeon nesting in the ivy hedge was lucky when a Sparrowhawk crashed into the hedge mid afternoon but couldn't reach his target.

From the Haven.

John Hall

A leisurely stroll from GC to raised tee and back which purports to be my exercise failed  to raise my pulse rate, neither did my observations. A dozen or so Crows on the beach and golf course plus a handful of Jackdaws. 1 male Reed Bunting, 4 Mipits and a constant accompaniment or arguing Herring Gulls. The tide line of spume covered wavelets looked perfect for Sanderlings, unfortunately no one sent them an  invite. A most enjoyable break from our confinement.

Paul Brayshaw

Male Black Redstart at the paddocks Frinton side of the farm
Also distant views of what I would happily have said was a Whinchat if we were a month later - couldn’t refind it once we’d been round the paddocks to confirm unfortunately
Nothing else of note on Frinton- farm- golf course- seawall circuit.

Matt Lonsdale

Haven exercise this morning- seems to be a bit of a clear out.
2 chiffs and Siskin (heard) in bushes.
Dunlin, 3 Blackwit, Avocet, Snipe and Marsh Harrier around hide.
C40 Brent north.

Sun 22nd March 20

After encountering the large number of people using Holland Haven yesterday I decided to stay at home today, hopefully people will heed government advice and it will be possible to get some exercise in some sort of isolation.
I will of course keep the Blog as up to date as possible with any reports I receive.

Sat 21st March 20

I had a short visit this afternoon and managed to see the Ruff from the top of the hill, but it was very busy with loads of people walking the seawall, like a Bank Holiday.

Matt Lonsdale

08:31 4 Crossbill N from dipping pond now!

Highlight though was a close common seal playing in the waves off the raised tee that the kids really enjoyed.

Lt.Ringed Plover was a New For Year for Pete Loud at lunchtime today with two on the scrape, the earliest by at least a week since our records began.

Monday 16 March 2020

Mon 16th March 20

A good day weather wise and bird wise today, a look over the road on the way into site turned up my first view of a Cetti's Warbler of the year. Moving onto the main site a Chiffchaff was singing along the approach road, the Dell was quiet but the small wooded area to the south held a Firecrest (NFY) in the ivy bush.
A walk along the front soon added another NFY in the form of a Wheatear atop a bush in the moth sanctuary being mobbed by a pair of Stonechat, the walk to the golf course added just a couple of Skylark, Reed Bunting and c30 Curlew. On the way back 2 Wheatear were on the hedge between the moth sanctuary and the hide.

From the hide : 1 Black Swan, 4 Greylag, c150 Wigeon, c100 Teal, 46 Shoveler, 17 Shelduck, 1 Gadwall, 32 Avocet, 15 Lapwing, 9 Snipe, 8 BlkWits, 2 Oystercatcher, 1 Redshank, 1 Lt. Egret, 2 Kestrel, 1 Buzzard. MR

Another Chiffchaff was in the area between the hide and the sluice a second Firecrest at the entrance to the sewage works and at least 4 more Chiffchaff along the carpark bottom hedge (poss.influx during the morning). The same could be said for the Wheatear as at lunch time Dave Cummings had 3 and by mid afternoon Liz Huxley had 4.

Dave Cummings

14:13 Three Wheatear now showing well between hide and moth sanctuary.

John Hall

15:09 Wheatear on grass front of sea watching hide one on gun emplacement poss. same birds

Liz Huxley

15:14 Pm visit. 4 wheatear, 10+ chiffchaff, pair kestrel, song thrush, 34 avocet, 54 shoveler, 9 blackwit, 2 dunlin, 3 snipe, black swan, male gadwall, common buzzard, kingfisher, 4 reed bunting.

Sunday 15 March 2020

Sun 15th March 20

Pete Loud started the day with another fly-by Fulmar heading north, but the rest of his sea-watch and Ian, Matt & Max's look around the site added nothing of note, I joined them at the sluice and as we headed for the hide Max called our attention to a duck flying overhead as a Mandarin, sure enough a drake Mandarin (NFY) circled round, had a look at the scrape and was then lost to view behind the sewage works. Not a bad bird for the sites No.100 of the year !!.
From the hide :  1 Black Swan, 4 Canada Geese, c150 Wigeon, c120 Teal, 43 Shoveler, 14 Shelduck, 2 Gadwall (drakes), 14 Avocet (incl. GB/GY), 10+ Lapwing, 10 Curlew, 6 Snipe, 3 BlkWit's, 1 Oystercatcher, 1 Lt. Egret, 1 Kestrel + Meadow Pipit, Reed Bunting, Skylark & Pied Wagtail. PL/IM/ML/MM/MR.

On the return to the carpark 2 Chiffchaff were heard in the Mounds/Ringing Compound area and 3 Adders were also seen (see Haven Wildlife page).

Saturday 14 March 2020

Sat 14th March 20

Again not special weather wise this morning with rain first thing, a cold wind and overcast skies. A short sea-watch which gave just a few Cormorant and R T Diver moving about offshore was finished 15 mins before Paul Brayshaw reported a G N Diver north passed Frinton. PL/IM/MM/MR.
We split up and most of the southern end of the site was covered with nothing of note found.

From the hide : 1 Black Swan, 2 Canada Geese, 7 Brent (over), c100 Wigeon, c70 Teal, 32 Shoveler, 14 Shelduck, 4 Gadwall (drakes), 30 Curlew, 20+ Snipe, 22 Avocet, 10 Lapwing, 1 Oystercatcher, 1 Dunlin, 1 Water Rail, 3 Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 1 Barn Owl, 1 Grey Wagtail. PL/PRD/IM/MM/MR

Paul Brayshaw

12:22 Golf course area fairly quiet - 2 Stonechat, 6 Redwing (NFY), 2 Buzzard and 2 Chiffchaff (all within haven boundary). 4 R T Diver and 2 Gannet north also from haven part of sea wall.

John Hall

15:59 PM update for scrape.
1 Buzzard, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Dunlin, 5 Blackwits, 21 Avocets, 3 Drake Gadwall. No sign of Grey Wagtail Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler, and Shelduck as per.

Couple of Chiffs only passerines of note in bushes.

Friday 13 March 2020

Fri 13th March 20

Dave Cummings started the day with a walk around the approach road wood which turned up 2 Chiffchaff along with the normal Tits and Finches etc. I joined him on a walk to the 3rd pillbox which added just a pair of Stonechat and a few Mippits and Skylark, 1 Buzzard and a Green wing tagged Marsh Harrier (probably L6 but no positive ID). DC/MR

From the hide : 1 Black Swan, 2 hybrid Geese (Greylag/Canada ?), Wigeon and Teal, 31 Shoveler, 18 Shelduck, 20 Avocet, 12 Lapwing, 7 Snipe, 5 BlkWits, 3 Oystercatcher, 2 Redshank, 1 Water Rail, 1 Kestrel. Plus a Water Vole in front of the hide (see Haven Wildlife page). DW/DC/JH/MR

On the way back to the carpark a Green Woodpecker flew from the ringing compound and a good mixture of birds were on the feeders.

An afternoon visit to the hide by Dave Cummings added 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Stonechat and 1 Barn Owl to the morning list.

Thursday 12 March 2020

Thu 12th March 20

A different day today with a biting south/east wind blowing along the coast. Pete Davis had a walk along the front to the golf course but saw nothing of note.

Wednesday 11 March 2020

Wed 11th March 20

On the way to the hide 3 Adders were noted (see Haven Wildlife page).

Late start for me today as it was WeBS count weekend. I met Pete loud on his way home at the Feeding Stn. and whilst chatting we picked up a Chiffchaff beside the sewage works gate. Pete had covered most of the site in the morning and things were much the same as yesterday.
On my way to the hide I came across a single Adder and to my great surprise my first Grass Snake of the year on the mounds (see Haven Wildlife).

Fri 6th March 20

Reports from today.

John Hall

12:36 From the Scrape: Water level very high. Nice conditions rewarded us with 1st Chiffchaff for year showing well on reeds in front of hide, 15 Avocet, 36+ Shovelers, 26 Shelduck, 1 Marsh Harrier, 2 Kestrel, 1 Peregrine, Wigeon and Teal as norm, 100+ Lapwings. Pete Davis had very brief sighting of Cetti’s Warbler.
12:47 Further: A phenomenon which all three of us agreed we had never seen before and which happened at least 10 times, was the synchronised immersing of the large mixed duck flock. It caused a lot of speculation but no real answers. PRD,DC,JH. (The debate continued).
15:17 Also Oystercatcher and 2 Snipe.

Thursday 5 March 2020

Thu 5th March 20

I missed the three days of light winds and sunshine, back to the normal strong winds and torrential rain today.
Thankfully the Avocets were still around and getting settled in, all paired up and looking for suitable nest sites, as were a few Lapwing, fingers crossed for this spring.

From the hide : 1 Black Swan, 4 Canada Geese, c250 Wigeon, c150 Teal, 23 Shoveler, 8 Shelduck, 1 Gadwall, c100 Lapwing, 14 Avocet, 10 Snipe, 1 Oystercatcher, 1 Kestrel, 2 Reed Buntings. PRD/MR.

Nice in the sun today but still a chilly wind, very quiet around the whole site this morning. Nothing of note around the approach road, the Dell or the carpark bushes, a few L T Tits, Great Tit and Blue Tits on the feeders, nothing offshore apart from one Curlew heading South.
