As referenced in the All Time Haven List, a significant number of current and former regulars plus one or two 'friends of the Haven', have offered up their predictions for what will be the next new full species recorded. So, for the 277th species the predictions are as follows....
John Hall Rose Coloured Starling
Mick Rodwell. Greenish Warbler
Pete Davis. Spotted Sandpiper
Ian Minton. Nuthatch
Gary Gardner. Black Winged Stilt
Kas Aldous. Golden Oriole
Adrian Dowling. Ferruginous Duck
Paul Brayshaw. Cory's Shearwater
Simon Cox. Kentish Plover
Clive Atkins. Black Winged Pratincole
Jim Kendall. American Wigeon
Clive Johnson. Tawny Pipit
Pete Loud. White Rumped Sandpiper
John Sawyer. Ortolan Bunting
Pete Newton. Green Winged Teal
Pete Newson. Short Toed Lark
George Brown Red-flanked Bluetail
Whilst a bit of fun there are some rules.
Your pick stays with you until it turns up, after which you get to chose another, but not one already chosen by someone else! Also, as a prize for the finder of the next new species to be added to the list (must be generally available, ie no single observer fly by's!) Ian, our de facto Recorder, has kindly offered an all inclusive paid for full English breakfast at the cafe below Clacton Sailing Club!! (Offer not available to ROI, Northern Ireland, Channel Islands or Wigboro Wick......although if Black Winged Pratincole did turn up I'd happily buy Clive, and whoever found it, breakfast for a week!) Otherwise you get nothing for just selecting correctly , however, if you did manage to find your own prediction that in turn gives itself up to all comers, then I'm sure Ian will throw in an additional tea and slice of toast! An offer that off course extends to Paul at Frinton when he calls the Cory's heading our way in September close inshore past a crowded sea watching shelter! Also suitably eligible are our former and current ringers who conceivable could find their own predictions hanging in a mist net, except for the slight problem that they all opted for non passerines!
So, with a multitude of species to still choose from (by no means not all national rares), if you're not one of the named above, and wish to take part, just let either Mick or me know and we'll add your prediction to the list.
Now someone find me a roosting Nightjar this spring (or summer, or autumn)!!
Pete Davis (Feb 2020)
