Much the same again today, on a very wet morning. The Common Sand was still at the back of the scrape and a cracking summer plumage Golden Plover dropped in for a couple of minutes before being sent packing by the Lapwings, otherwise numbers as of late. RJ/DC/MR.

At the end of May the number of species recorded at the Haven this year stands at 148.

Another very quiet morning, with just a Common Sandpiper new on the scrape, otherwise much the same.

From the hide: 4 Canada Geese, 28 Mallard, 18+ Shelduck (plus ducklings), 16 Gadwall, 5 Teal, 3 Shoveler, 1 Tufted Duck (drake), 20 Avocet, 5 Lapwing, 3 Oystercatcher, 2 Redshank, 1 Common Sand, 1 Cuckoo, 20+ Swift, 20+ House Martin, a few Swallows, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 1 Yellow Wagtail, Sedge Warbler, Reed Warbler, Cetti's Warbler.

All very much the same again today, the only highlight being a Hobby that spent some time perched in a dead tree out on the arable.

From the hide: 2 Mute Swans, 4 Canada Geese(+ goslings), 30+ Shelduck (+ ducklings), 18 Gadwall, 12+ Mallard, 5 Teal, 5 Shoveler, 2 Tufted Duck, 12 Avocet, 6 Lapwing, 2 Redshank, 2 Oystercatcher, 1 Blk T Godwit, 1 Cuckoo, a few Swallow & Swift, 1 House Martin, 1 Yellow Wag, Reed Bunting, Reed Warbler, Cetti's Warbler. 10:25 Spotted Flycatcher  - where bridleway meets golf course, field side of hedge behind club workshop.

17:50 Walk from Frinton to Haven and back via farm this morning included: 1 Spotted Flycatcher, 1 Little Owl (where footpath leaves the golf course), 3 Corn Bunting (singing, 1 along footpath, 1 by east paddock, 1 near manure heap by bridleway), 130+ Starling (two post-breeding flocks, 80+ on flood, 50+ western edge of golf course), 2 Lesser Whitethroat (singing), 9 House Martin, 22 Swallow, 8 Linnet, 6 Cetti’s (singing), 10 Reed Warbler (singing), 3 Reed Bunting (singing), 2 Sedge Warbler (singing), 11 Swift, 4 Teal, 2 Red-legged Partridge, 8 Hare, 1 Cuckoo (singing), 11 Avocet, 2 Shoveler, 10 Gadwall, 1 Grey Heron, 6 Whitethroat (singing), 4 Blackcap (singing), 1 Green Woodpecker, 2 Greenfinch, 1 Tufted Duck, 2 Chinese muntjac. Mon 27th May 24

A hunt around the bushes for Spot Fly was unsuccessful this morning but quite a few of the residents still in good voice.

Thankfully a Cattle Egret put in an appearance to the right of the hide to brighten up the morning, a cracking bird in breeding plumage, spent some time in with the cows out on the marsh. 

From the hide: 2 Mute Swans, 4 Canada Geese, 2 Greylag, 34 Shelduck, 12 Gadwall, 4 Teal, 1 Shoveler, 8 Avocet, 6 Lapwing, 2 Redshank, 2 Oystercatcher, 1 Cattle Egret, 4 Cormorant, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Buzzard, Cetti's Warbler & Reed Warbler.

 

 

Sun 26th May 24

Very quiet this morning from the hide absolutely no sign of a Spoonbill, five minutes after I got home I saw Matt's message, just amassing.

From the hide: 2 Mute Swans (also 2 on the brook behind the sluice with 3 cygnets), 4 Canada Geese, 2 Greylag, 36+ Shelduck, 12 Gadwall, 12 Mallard, 3 Teal, 2 Tufted Duck, 1 Shoveler, 10 Avocet, 5 Lapwing, 2 Oystercatcher, 1 Redshank, 6 Swallow, Cetti's Warbler. Plus 5 Sanderling were on the beach north of the sluice.

19:54 Spoonbill still present fast asleep on the scrape.  Also two Tufted still, Med Gull, hunting Marsh Harrier, Hobby and Barn Owl.  Fulmar south offshore.
