A very average morning with just a new Spotted Redshank on the scrape was suddenly changed when Richard excitedly exclaimed (and I mean excitedly!!) that a pair of Cranes were dropping into the marsh. The two birds landed to the right of the hide and settled in, after c15 min of continual attention from nesting Lapwings they moved up onto the arable, and after a further few minutes farm traffic saw them climb quite high and drift out toward Lt. Clacton.
Around 11:30 the birds were relocated on the marsh west of the B1032 from the chippings lay-by.

Bumped into Richard and we had a Fulmar past the sluice, could be new for year. Just few other bits, 2 Green Sands and 9 Dunlin on pools behind raised platform, Spot Red still and 3 Whimbrel over.
Saw a red kite (tail seemed too long for black) fly over the Rectory paddock (the old 'common') at Church Lane, Great Holland travelling inland. At first hoped it was one of the cranes but still a first for me here! Matt Gough
